About Importing From China

As we know China is fast becoming one of the worlds biggest mass production super powers, already making a huge ammount of the world's consumer products.

Costs of manufacturing in China are very low compared to elsewhere in the world. This presents a great opportunity to any wholesalers or dropshippers as you are able to get extremely low prices per unit and turn then around for a good profit in your own country.

There are how ever some very important points to consider when dealing with suppliers from China.

You have to spend time talking to your suppliers, contact through email and messenger is a great way of communicating but you cant beat actually talking on the phone to suppliers.

Try to get a sample of what you are selling so you can inspect the quality. And always start out with a small order as this will build up your trust with your supplier.

It is difficult to get a credit card in China so most of the time your supplier will only accept payment through Western Union and wire transfer. Both of these methods are non secure and untraceable (hence starting with a small order to test the water).

China is well known for producing fake goods. Do your research on what you are buying and remember if it looks to good to be true it usually isn't.
Also if an item is advertised under a banner like this ‘authentic designer brands’ it is nearly always FAKE!

Tips on how to find a real China wholesale supplier;

  • If your not sure about the authenticity of your China supplier why not look them up in the China Vista Yellow Pages found here;
  • http://www.yp.net.cn
  • (Translate using google toolbar)
  • Always check out any import restrictions on what you are shipping.
  • Try to bargain with your supplier over shipping costs. Shipping is not always set in stone and a lot of suppliers pad out the costs to improve their own margins.(Have you ever added a little extra on shipping with your ebay sales?).
  • If you are interested in importing to the Uk from outside the EU you will have to pay VAT of 17.5% and this rule applies to EVERYONE!
  • Check out http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageImport_Home for more information on this.
  • If you are interested in importing to the Uk from outside the EU and you are not VAT registered you will have to get a PSEUDO TURN number. Without this your goods will not be cleared.
  • After you have developed a good relationship with a supplier why not ask about cheaper rates for frequent customers i.e 5% or 10%. If you dont ask you don't get!
